QR code not scanning: causes and fixes

Most scan failures are print size, contrast, glare or an old code from a test event. Work through the checklist before reprinting.

Work through these in order. In our support history, the first three cover almost every case.

1. It is the wrong code

Hosts often create a test event, print its code, then delete the test. Scan the printed code and check the event name on the page that opens. If it is wrong or the page says the event was not found, download the code again from the live event under Your QR Code.

2. It is too small

Print the code at least 3 cm (1.2 in) wide for table cards and 10 cm (4 in) for signs read from a distance. Codes on business cards are fine when held close.

3. Low contrast or no quiet zone

The code needs dark modules on a light background and clear space around it. Codes recoloured to gold on cream, or printed edge to edge inside a dark frame, fail on many phones. Use the file from the dashboard as is.

4. Glare

Glossy paper or a sign behind glass under spotlights reflects into the camera. Matte paper, or tilt the sign.

5. The phone

All iPhones since iOS 11 and nearly all Android phones scan from the camera app. On a few older Android phones the guest needs to open Google Lens from the camera, or type the link instead. Print the short event link under the code for that case.

6. No signal at the venue

The scan works offline but the page needs data. If the venue has poor reception, share the venue Wi-Fi password on the sign, or ask guests to upload later; the upload window stays open for weeks after the event.
